What does it Take ?
What does it take to stop mass shootings. How many times have we seen in the news that there has been a new mass shooting, how many times do we see that people are getting killed because of someone that is mentally sick. Could it be that what we watch on television , the news, exaggerates too much could it be that not the whole story of what is presented on the news is true. What are sources that we can trust or is it up to us to figure out what is happening in the world, but then again we come back to the same thing even if the news exaggerates what is happing it is no excuse and we still are seeing mass shootings we still see people getting killed. So we come back to the original question, what does it take? We see that the lawyers of the shooters blame bulling and mental illness, but isn't that's why the government has invested lots of money into programs that help stop bullying and also programs that help with mental illness and they also set up counselors for troubled kids. How many more shootings is it going to take for us to finally figure out how to stop shootings? DO we need harsher punishments for the killers so people think twice about shooting up place or perhaps more security, or even restrict the media from turning a mass shooting into a exaggeration?

I think a lot of it has to do with a culture that "promotes" this kind of behavior. Most mass shootings are done by males and I think this in part to us raising boys to believe that violence is the first option. To believe that being rejected is a fate worse than death and in order to "be a man" you have to extract revenge. We tell them that boys can't have emotions so they won't seek help if they are going through things. Obviously this is not the only cause of mass shootings but it could be a large contributor.
ReplyDeleteYou make a very good point here. A large majority of these school shooters, and just shooters in general, are male. A lot of males are taught to repress their emotions, to internalize everything and to not have a decent outlet to express those emotions like a good support group, talking about it, or even crying.
DeleteThese internalized emotions cause people to not fully process what they're feeling, and cause people to find other less productive means to try to get those emotions out of them. Like anger. Build up enough of these suppressed emotions, and you get these extreme outbursts like these school shootings.
Creating support groups and emotion awareness amongst the whole population, not only boys, will cause people to not try to lash out in dangerous means like anger, but will find ways to try to process and come to terms with their emotions.
I also agree with this point boys are taught to be strong, only wimps cry type of thing. so all the emotions are being held inside, many of these shooters may feel as though they have no one to turn to. I think it takes a lot of things to cause someone to shoot a place up, we say video games that are violent have an effect, but i also think what goes on at home, school and other things in a

What do you mean by "the media...turning a mass shooting into an exaggeration?"
