The Jungle was a homeless encampment that resided in the area of Silicon Valley near Coyote Creek and it was near tech companies. It was shut down by authorities on 2014. The makeshift shelters of The Jungle covered about 68 acres of the creek which made it the largest homeless encampment in the U.S. The Los Angeles Times claims that the creation of the Jungle was caused by the rise of rent. So, it seems that people in the Jungle weren't able to afford rent or even begin to rent an apartment. Quality of life was bad is to be expected, even Robert Aguirre, a man that once lived in The Jungle, stated that everyone fended for themselves.
The government did not see this encampment as a homeless problem, rather a encampment problem, they did not like the fact that a large number of people were living in tents near high tech companies.
Some ex-residents of The Jungle were able to find housing and a job, while some were left to roam the streets

Thanks this is interesting, I found it interesting since it reminds me of the time where the government also broke apart a community of veterans that had made the same sort of housing arrangements.
ReplyDeleteThis was really interesting to read about. It's sad that the government deemed it to be such a large issue that they had to shut it down and leave many struggling people homeless.
ReplyDeleteI think another reason it was shut down was because of the mess it was making and the harm to the environment. Having so much trash going into the creek had harmful effects to the ecosystem and because it was in a creek it was spreading to other areas as well. After removing everyone (which is very unfortunate) they redid the area, cleaning it up and planting new life there.
ReplyDeleteIt is sad to read about people having been moved from their location but like Jamie said the trash pollution was affecting other areas that were surrounding the creek.
ReplyDeleteI believe the police would be worried about the jungle because I doubt the area was regulated. Definitely good they broke it up. I heard they also helped the homeless people they evicted by giving them food and shelter for a bit until they got back onto their feet. No one should have to live in a place like that.
ReplyDeleteYes, no should have to live under the conditions of the Jungle, but that was the only place they could live.
