Are Americans Too Jaded?

Yesterday, Eminem ripped Donald Trump in a cypher during the BET Hip Hop Awards. Upon first glance it would seem that this performance has blown up the internet like never before, but if you take a closer look, the reaction is much more underwhelming than it would have been 20 years ago. During a time of seemingly unending tragedies occurring all over the world, this cypher is almost an afterthought. This would have been groundbreaking years ago, but today, my mom and dad don't even know about it. With such controversial topics already floating around this is just another drop of water in the ocean. Even though I agree with what Eminem is saying and support it, I am sad to say that Americans are officially too jaded for their own good. Even though it was trending on Twitter today, I wonder if it will even be thought of in a month. With everything happening in Puerto Rico and Las Vegas, this is just another thing that we can, and will, brush to the side so we can go on with our lives.

  1. I believe that Americans will move on from individual protests. However, I believe tragedies like Vegas will remembered just as 911 was.

  2. This is a great point Nate. I agree that with all these recent events appearing in such a short amount of time, our standards of interesting news has been risen so much that when something that would have been talked about everywhere for awhile, such as the Eminem diss, are being covered up by these horrible events that don't happen very often but are affecting many people.

  4. I definitely agree. With the rise of mass media, it's becoming easier and easier to access information, but with ease of access comes desensitization. We keep seeing these shocking events, but at the rate they're coming, we become more and more used to it.

The thing is though, can we fix this? Has the world always been this shocking, and we're just now seeing it for the first time because of the internet? Or has the world changed, devolved some might say. If it's the ladder, how do we go back to a world of peace? Or, if its the former, will we ever be able to change what seems to be human nature?
