1986 - Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants

Ronald Reagan signed an immigration reform bill into law. It would cause stricter security at the Mexican border and it would also cause stricter penalties for employers who would hire undocumented workers. But this bill would allow immigrants who had entered the country before 1982 to be eligible for amnesty. Amnesty is an "official pardon for people who have been convicted of a political offense".

The law was supposed to stop illegal immigration, but instead, it just made it worse. It went from 5 million unauthorized immigrants to 11.1 million since 1986.

This law was ineffective. There was barely any funding to have good border restrictions.

No immigration laws have passed. George HW Bush tried, then Bill Clinton, and then Obama.

Now, President Trump wants to build a wall to stop it...

Many people hope that legislators have learned from their past mistakes and create better immigration laws.
