Andrea Yates was a mother of 5 children that she confessed of drowning June 2001. According to her husband she was a loving mother but ever since someone arrived in the area that they were living, she was not being herself. Noah, her first son, was the reason that she had quit her job and was a perfectionist when it came to raising him. John was born a year later and September 1997, their third son Paul was born. Andrea was diagnosed with postpartum psychosis which only 1 or 2 in 1,000 people suffer from. She had her fourth son Luke February 1999.
Because of her mental illness she believed that the best thing to do for her children was to let them go. She killed her children because she believed that she wasn't a good mother and her children would go to heaven. As time passed, she began to follow whatever her husband said and just responded by saying yes or nodding which seemed off to a few of her friends.
She was taken to a mental institution where she was later released because the doctors believed she was getting better. Her husband believed it was too soon but still accepted her release. When she was taken home she was reunited with her children and was left alone with them for an hour where her husbands mother was also taking care of Andrea. During then hour that she was left alone with the children, she was able to drown all five of them, her oldest son being the one that resisted the most.
The error in this was the time that they released her from the mental institution. The doctor clearly said that they shouldn't try to have a kid because she would be stressed out and it wouldn't be good for her at all.
My personal opinion, I think that her husband and the doctor were partly to blame because they were aware of her condition and the fact that they didn't think that she should stay there for a while longer was completely wrong. Those children did deserve more.
