Over a month ago, we watched a video called the “The Bad Samaritan”, in which two college students, David Cash and Jeremy Strohmeyer, visited Vegas and committed a horrific crime. While they were in a casino at 3 a.m., Strohmeyer brought a seven-year-old girl into the bathroom and began sexually assaulting her. While this was happening, David Cash entered the bathroom and tapped Strohmeyer on the head to try to stop him, but it didn’t work. Cash did not want to get in trouble for what was going on, so he decided to leave instead of standing up to his friend and helping the young girl. After Strohmeyer had raped and killed the seven-year-old girl, they did not tell anyone and the two left for Vegas. The young girl’s body was not found in the bathroom until 5 a.m. The boys were caught, and Strohmeyer sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, sexual assault on a minor, and substantial bodily harm. However, David Cash did not face any consequences for the young girl’s death because he did not participate in the act of killing her. At the time, doing nothing about a crime was not considered a crime at all, so even though Cash could have easily stepped in, it was his choice to avoid the situation completely. While I believe Cash should have been punished, there was no law that made his actions illegal. However, since this tragedy, the Sherrie Iverson bill has been passed in Nevada, which requires people to report any suspicion of a minor being sexually abused or violently treated. Do you guys agree with this bill? Do you think David Cash should have faced a punishment for his role in Sherrie Iverson’s death?
I feel David Cash should have faced some type of punishment because he knew something was going on with his friend and that little girl. Then after his friend told him he killed the girl and he didn't tell anyone not even the police. I feel he should face some type of punishment.
ReplyDeleteI think that making this law is a good thing because it will encourage people in those situations to take action. The reason David Cash didn't take action was because he didn't have sufficient motivation. He weighed the consequences of leaving and since there were none he left. Now that there are consequences for those type of actions, incidences like this may be stopped.
ReplyDeleteAdding on to what Christian commented, I disagree in a way. Although what David Cash did was horribly wrong and unjustified, he thought his actions were right in accordance to his morals. I do agree that the bill that was passed is a step in the right direction keeping the public safer and holding bystanders more accountable if they recognize harm and do not take action to help. However, I do not believe that Cash should face any punishment because at the occurrence of the crime, he did not break any laws. He was looking out for what was his best interest apparently, but morally it was very wrong in a sense that he could have taken action much earlier. He shouldn't face a punishment because he did not do anything lawfully wrong, just morally wrong.
ReplyDeleteI think the bill is good. If someone knows that a minor is being abused, they should report it. I do think that cash should be punished because he had the ability to stop it and he didn't which lead to the death of a minor.
ReplyDeleteI think that there are many people that don't like that David cash didn't get punished, and I also don't agree that David Cash just got to walk off without any punishment, but I understand the ideas that he had and honestly I think many of us are probably the same and would do the same, because we think that we would do the right thing but that's not always true
