About three weeks ago, Kevin Spacey was accused of sexual misconduct with a fourteen-year-old boy. Spacey then posted an apology on his Twitter account that claimed he "was horrified to hear the story”, “doesn’t remember the encounter”, and that it was “inappropriate drunken behavior.” This explanation from Spacey is extremely angering because being drunk does not justify making sexual advances on a teenage boy. Within two weeks, more than twelve other men spoke out against Spacey, stating that he sexually harassed, assaulted, or even tried to rape them. Among these men, five said they were teenagers at the time of the incidents. This clearly shows that Spacey was lying in his apology letter and that this sexual harassment was a continuous trend. Since these accusations, Spacey has been removed from the TV series “House of Cards” and his new movie “All the Money in the World.” I am very glad that Spacey is receiving this harsh treatment and being ostracized by Hollywood. What are your thoughts on this situation?
I agree with your opinion. Due to the fact that it was a reoccurring incident and the fact that he was drunk makes it highly unacceptable. But even if he wasn't under the influence would be horribly wrong. This harsh treatment I believe is a benefit and shows the severity of the incident. But to make it stay a legal case will secure and provide justice for those who were taken advantage of. And the fact that he is able to deny is is even more upsetting.
ReplyDeleteI think there exists a problem right now with all of these accusations coming out at once. Because they are all being exposed at the same time, the weight of each incidence is being marginalized. It almost makes it seem OK since everyone else was doing it.
ReplyDeleteI can't deny that the weight of sexual accusations has been lightened due to the sheer amounts of sexual accusations there have been in the past couple weeks, but I think it's outweighed by the positive of having women finally feeling the power to come out against their assaulters, which is a great thing for women in general.
DeleteNot only did he deny the accusations, that continue to grow in numbers, he used coming out as a way to try and detract from the situation. He attempted to use his often questioned sexuality as a way to distract form his decades of abuses. Not only did it not help him, but had the potential to harm the LGBT community who for years has had to try and get rid of the false image that they are all pedophiles/sex offenders.
ReplyDeleteI completely support this comment because not only did Spacey use this horrible thing to come out and throw the whole community under the bus but he might have influenced that stereotype that people have of the LGBT community.
