Thanksgiving began in 1621, in which the Plymouth colonist and Wampanoag Indians united and shared a harvest. This feast was known as the first Thanksgiving celebration in this colony. For years Thanksgiving has been celebrated in different states and colonies, but it wasn't until 1863 it became a national day. Known as Thanksgiving Day in November, granted by President Abraham Lincoln.
This was a very important time that showed how our community and relationship with the Native Americans started back in the days of the colonies. This holiday is a great representation of our respect to the Native Americans who were here before us and something that we don't see a lot anymore nowadays.
ReplyDeleteTo me Thanksgiving has always been bittersweet. It has been a time of fun and laughter, and no school. I believe there is a negative side that is rarely talked about, and easier to forget. This was the beginning of the end for the Native Americans, and the start of a mass land invasion by the Europeans. So while we celebrate Thanksgiving this year, let's try to remember the Native Americans and their great loss.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting fact filled blog but I find it interesting how america has taken many different cultural celebrations from many different countries wether it is good or bad I find it interesting how it makes up this nation.l
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Tyler, I feel that first there are so many different cultures in our nation and that this makes a huge difference in our world. All of our celebrations wouldn't be the same if we didn't have everyone's cultures built into a massive celebration that just makes up our world even if we don't celebrate the same things.
