Brain Scans for background checks.

Psychopaths are known to be born with a deficiency for having empathy for others and being extremely self-centered. The ventromedial prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that is responsible for empathy and decision making. With modern technology, it is possible to run brain scans on people to see whether this part of the brain is active or not, therefore determining whether a person is a psychopath or not. Could we incorporate these brain scans into background checks for guns? It may be costly but it would be the choice of the person that wants to buy the gun to pay for this test in order to attain a firearm. Would eliminating psychopaths from getting guns help stop shootings, or would these things happen as often by ordinary people and sociopaths. Also, is this ethically right? Do psychopaths have the right to the second amendment too and would it be discrimination to treat them any differently for how they were born.  Could psychopaths even be considered a race or ethnicity or even community like the deaf community?

  1. First of all I like the idea behind this but no I don't think it would be effective and I don't think psychopaths should be considered a race or ethnicity. I think this would cost too much money and solve too little of the problem. Even if you do want to blame mental illness there is much more that needs to be checked than just if you're a psychopath. Whereas if you want to blame gun control than you should do much more than just a brain scan for one thing to get a gun.
