The Rwandan Genocide was carried out in 1994. As Rwanda was in the middle of a civil war. This build-up to the Genocide of a million Tutsis and Hutu people was due to the unstable government in a matter of 6 weeks. This all began in 1897 when the German government came to take charge of the country. As the two tribes were not too familiar with each other there was no major conflict but as the German government came into control they immediately put the Tutsi tribe in charge. Due to the Tutsi tribe only making only 10-11% of the population it formed a sort of competition between the two groups blinding them and leaving Germany to continue staying in charge.
As time continued the Tutsis were educated and superior to the Hutus tribe. This lead to hatred among the two as they did not see each other as equal. When the Tutsis attempted to become independent, because of how the government was organized, it leads to Belgium trying to reverse the power and prejudices and take away the privileges of Tutsi and give them to the Hutus group so they would be distracted and not overthrow the government. Rwanda still ended up becoming independent in 1962 under the control of the Hutus government.
As a result of the hatred and anger building up against the Tutsis and everyone associated with them. Once something sparked the flare to beginning killing many did nor questioned based on their prejudices and everything people were telling. Making them believe the killings were okay and went forward killing neighbors and friends.
The Tutsi tribe was used as a scapegoat much like the Jewish people in the holocaust as Tutsis were said and seen to be blood and power thirsty and trying to infiltrate the Hutu way. Although in this case there was a much brutal scene. While many in the holocaust could hide clearly behind the switch of a gas chamber many in Rwanda did not have this technology and had to do all the killing and murders by hand making it twice as brutal and ruthless.
Despite all of this the UN was aware of what was happening but did not mention or call attention to this time as a genocide. Though it was preplanned and organized following the definition of a genocide it was not clearly labeled that until after a very long time when the UN finally came to end the killings. This shows a real change that has to happen and how the rule to act against a genocide needs to be revised so this massacre of killings cannot happen again. No more loss of lives.
