CNN reported a story about a comedian by the name of Mark Meechan who was sentenced to six months in prison for violating section 127 of the UK communications act, it prohibits the use of offensive content through electronic communications. Basicly, Meechan committed a hate crime.
What did Meechan do, exactly? In a youtube video, Meechan made his pug dog do the nazi salute at his command, in another clip the dog was watching Nazi rallies. Meechan had taught his dog for weeks. The video was rather harmless, but a lot of people took offense and Meechan was sentenced.
Meechan said he did not intend to offend anyone and feels that he did not do anything wrong in the long run and has also said that he is not racist. He made the video for his girlfriend who kept annoying Meechan because she liked to say his dog was cute.
Personally, I did not take offense to the video and it made me chuckle, though I think nazi and holocaust jokes don´t have any substance sometimes. I also think that this law that put Meechan in infringes on people´s free speech.
