First of all I think arming teachers is a horrible idea. No matter their training or no matter the gun I do not believe a teacher should have access to any weapons. One reason I have for this strong opinion is because of a teacher my sister had when she was in high school. Her class was misbehaving and the teacher had been at that school for many years and was known for having a temper, that teacher would throw things like white board erasers and markers but one day she got really mad and threw a desk at a student (pretty impressive for how old she was) after that she was obviously fired and not allowed back on campus. Now most of us would think that's ridiculous and wouldn’t happen again and that's probably true for the schools around us but think about how many other schools there are in the state, in the country that are nowhere near as good as ours. Some of those teachers could be as much of a risk as giving the students guns to protect themselves. I think the schools need to do a better job of responding to potential threats, watching kids with depression or mental illness, encouraging students watching out for one another and reporting anything suspicious. Sure it would make a lot more work for the school but no matter how much work it would be it would be worth even saving one life. I also think some schools, depending on threat level, should have metal detectors, less entrances, and better plans in case something happens. And I think the last resort would be to have government issued security. And I specify government issued because if you have school district issued they have to follow different rules, have different training, less controlled, and would get in less trouble for a mistake.
