Thoughts on my research on video games and violence/aggression/ stress

While I was researching on the topic of video games and violence/aggression/ stress, I was surprised to see how every researcher interprets data on the consumption of video games. There are people who say that video games do cause these negative effects and at the same time there are people who say that video games don´t cause any of the negative effects or video games help reduce the tendency to have these negative effects.

I think it just depends on who is playing video games that these negative effects will appear.  I think it is the easiest answer to the questions, ¨Do video games cause aggression¨, ¨Do video games cause stress?, and ¨do video games cause violence?¨.

  1. I don't think that video games are the direct cause of violence, aggression, or stress. I feel like they are the opposite.

  2. I think it's important to distinguish between violent video games and more casual ones.

Though violent video games can be an interactive method to experience storytelling, the video game industry have not utilize the storytelling aspect as much as mindless aim-and-kill. Just like with films or books, when used correctly, video games (even violent ones) can be generate empathy and understanding to a subject that one had never interact with before. Think of games that deals with a soldier's experience with PTSD after a war, it can be violent, but it can also open up a conversation about treatment and support for individuals that are suffering from PTSD.

I think it is a disservice to categorize "video games" as a whole as being detrimental or beneficial. It is, ultimately, about how we use them.

  4. I think that it can land on the parents and letting their 10 year or 8 year old play violent games like Call of Duty or GTA even if its on their phone or tablet. I was that young kid who loved playing GTA when I got my playstation 2 but I never had thoughts of what if I can do this in the real world because I always known that the game was of just technology and can't be done in real life. Then again everyone has a different mindset and take things in differently.

  5. I also agree with An – while I don't necessarily believe that video games are the direct cause of any aggressive or irrational acts, I do see a link between violent games and a loss of either empathy or sensitivity towards such violence/brutality.

  6. I agree, everyone can react different to the video games. We just have to keep in mind that there are people who will not know how to differentiate the difference between what is going on in the video game to real life.
But I definitely agree with An when she says that it isn't all "video games".
