"The Silent Holocaust" - Guatemala

In class, we are currently watching a documentary called "Worse than War". There was a part of the documentary that stood out the most to me. They talked about the Mayan Genocide. It was a shock to me because being born there I had not once heard about it. It occurred in the early 1980s. That was only 40 years ago! To hear the terrible things that the government did to the Mayan Indians was disturbing. They did these terrible things because they claimed that they were working towards a "communist coup". They would cut open pregnant women, slam innocent babies to the ground right in front of their mothers, they would rape the women and many other terrible things. These people did most of the killing with their hands. They wanted them to be brutally murdered and for them to suffer. The killers would also destroy crops, slaughtered livestock, contaminated their water supply, and offended sacred places and cultural symbols.

I would assume that most of those who did the killing or were part of this genocide are still alive. Do you think that these people try to deny this ever happened? To this day, people still deny that the Holocaust ever happened, do you think that they are doing the same with the Mayan Genocide?
