FIU Bridge
According to The Washington Post, yesterday afternoon at 1:30 pm, a newly built pedestrian bridge collapsed over a freeway on the FIU campus. The bridge was one of the first of its kind, being a "swing-on" bridge specifically for pedestrians to be able to walk over the freeway. Unfortunately, the bridge collapsed in broad daylight when the cables were in the midst of being tightened. As of Thursday night, there are 6 pronounced dead, 8 more cars stuck under the 950 ton bridge. The search for people trapped under the bridge has continued throughout the night and has finally come to a stop this morning. The construction company sends expresses their grief and says "The victims and their families deserve to know what went wrong. There will be an extraordinary review into what the errors were and what led to the catastrophic collapse". Hopefully the construction company finds the problem and is able to fix it soon.

I completely agree! We need to pay more attention to publicly used structures and how strong and safe they are. This could have been avoided if stress tests were done on the bridge.
ReplyDeleteI agree and that for what has happened back on March 15th, the fact they had it tested and everything and that it still collapsed I feel that the company possibly needs to go back and make sure that they are checking every bridge the way that they should since this hadn't even been there or a week. Like Nate said, these could be completely avoided if the tests were completely done on the bridge.
