Drinking Age.. Should it be lowered or raised?
This topic is very controversial. The drinking age is 21 as we all know.. only in America. In Europe the legal drinking age is 18. I know that the culture is different between America and Europe, because I've been to Europe and there were parents/their children drinking at my age.. even lower. There were 14 year old guys that knew when enough drinks were enough. I feel like some of us are mature enough to make that decision too. Should it be lowered? When I asked this question many people said no because more people would get wasted. I feel like this law isn't stopping anyone from drinking, especially teenagers. Some people argue that tolerance to alcohol will be much higher when we're 21 and that it is bad for our immune system. In my opinion, alcohol is bad for your system wether you're 18 or 21. In order to build your tolerance to alcohol, you would have to drink more. I don't think that depends on wether you get older. We are teenagers. I think most of us had at least one shot in our high school years and if you haven't, that's totally up to you. I am not encouraging teenagers to drink. I feel like when we are 18, we are legally and adult therefore we should be able to be mature enough to make our own decisions. Another point that was said to me was that more people will drink and drive. This is another very serious topic. I've done some research and at one point in America the legal drinking age was 18. It has been proven that more people who were 18 were drinking and driving. Honestly, I don't know where I stand at this point. There are so many different perspectives and I can't plot my opinion.

I think that the age should still be 21 to legally drink. I feel like a 21 year old might be slightly more mature than an 18 year old.
ReplyDeleteI think the drinking age should be lowered to 18 like in most European countries. The US is pretty much the only country in the world that has such a high age. I think it's better that 18-21 year olds (who will most likely get the opportunity to drink in college or otherwise) have the opportunity to do so in a controlled environment like a bar, than risking arrest. There is not a lot of stuff for 18-21 year olds to do for leisure in the US, we're old enough to want to go out on weekends but not old enough to do many of the things we want.
ReplyDeleteAt age 18 i believe is the most immature state of someone life. You are able to do more things alone. Most move out of their parents home, and believe that they can do anything they want. I dont believe that lowering the age would help the 18 year old develop their lives.

ReplyDeleteIt's possible that the reason teenagers under 21 today drink and drive is because alcohol is illegal. If it were made legal, their drinking habits wouldn't have to be swept under the carpet and they would be able to ask for help when they were drinking from anyone. Additionally, if it was legal, the stigma around kids drinking alcohol would go away so that we could properly educate people on safe usage of alcohol and what to do when you get in situations involving it. Finally, if it was legal for kids to obtain and drink alcohol, they wouldn't have to binge drink. The allure around alcohol would go away and it would become more for pleasure and less to get drunk. Perhaps they think, well this is my only time to have it I'd better get as much as I can now because I don't know when I'll be able to do this again. This attitude is I think what happens in Europe which is why kids, with a lowered drinking age, aren't going crazy on the alcohol.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with Jamie. Especially on the binge drink part. Many kids in America know that getting alcohol is not easy because they aren't 21 so they drink as much as they can when it is available to them
Delete(like at parties). This brings danger to them. If it was lower, I feel like the hype of alcohol would not be so high and people wouldn't be drinking as much.
