screen time and sleep

A lot of homework has been assigned on computer by teachers that is monitored through google classroom, some students do it during the day and some students stay up late at night trying to finish the assignment. The students who are up late at night are most affected by the negative side effects of spending too much time looking at a computer screen. When it is almost bedtime, the body produces a hormone called melatonin which signals the body to prepare for sleep. Students who are up late doing homework on the computer and looking their computer screens for a long period of time suppresses the production of melatonin and in turn the students lose sleep. As students, enough sleep  is important to get through day and keep up with the routine.

This is a problem for students who have other responsibilities and can´t attend to their homework during the day, or students that just do their homework at night. There needs to be a balance between computer work and work done on paper to help students get enough sleep.

  1. Having the computers I believe have been super helpful since it sometimes can be a lot quicker for doing homework but most students don't use the computers like they should be used. Even if teachers were to reduce the amount of homework I feel that we wouldn't be up till 4am but I still feel that students will still stay up will 1am or even 2am. I can say that in my personal experience I can 99% of the time finish homework by 12am and then I stay up for another hour or two either talking with friends or watching movies/netflix.

Erick, in your last paragraph about the balance between computer work and paper work, I completely agree. I think that it would definitely help with the balancing from teachers but again students sometimes don't just sit down without a phone or tv and just work. I have caught myself quite a few times still working on the same homework I have been for the past 3 hours because I pick up my phone or turn on tv or even going on facebook online.

Students need to understand how much sleep is important and if they do sports, they need to know how to balance their homework. If that means focusing in class more, then they shouldn't be goofing off in class and getting their homework done when they have free time so that they are going to bed before 12am or 1am.

  2. I dont think that by splitting up work from computer to paper will change that fact that students would do their Homework in the day. I would rather keep working in computer, because i can finish faster and has more benefits. You should be able to manage your time wisely, maybe consider droping other activities for homework.

  3. I think having homework on the computer is helpful especially if you want to look up information on the internet, but I do think it is really distracting.

  4. I find homework on the laptop is very helpful. It helps me keep track of everything and stay more organized. I think that there is opportunities during school time that you can take to do work such as Lunch time and tutorial. Most seniors have free periods as well. Everyone has their own responsibilities and I feel like one of them is to manage their time efficiently and schedule how to finish their workload and outside school activities.

  6. I agree with you. I definitely think that we spend to much time on our computers, especially during school. I'm on my computer about 80% of my time. I have seen many people during class not use the computers properly either. They are distracting. Many studies have also shown that writing things on paper are better to remember so working on a balance for paper work and computer work would be helpful.
