Facebook launching a "locked-down" version of itself
Facebook is launching an app that is tailored specifically to younger users. Even with the promise that parents will be able to see and approve friend requests for their children, many are still voicing the age-old issue of being too young to use social media.
Facebook faces some criticism for potentially 'grooming' their next generation of users. The company is losing out to competitors, like Snapchat, in the ability to hold on to its teenagers and young adults user base. Launching something like a controlled version of Messenger would introduce a generation of children, already fully engrossed in technology, to social media far earlier than healthy.
The fear stem from the negative effects already associated with a compulsion to use social media, present in older generation with less exposure to technology. Children should be spending time playing and exploring the their surrounding, not developing their FOMO.

In complete honesty just about your first paragraph that stood out to me is that I don't really believe that parents should be completely allowed to go onto their kids accounts and approve or decline certain friend requests for them. I feel that yes parents have a say in things but checking their child's Facebook account and their friend requests I don't believe should be okay.
ReplyDeleteI think the idea of making a safer Facebook for younger users is a good thought but the way its being executed I don't think is as good. If Facebook allows parents to hover-parent over their social media and choose which friends they can be with then the kids won't get a sense of freedom.
