Outcome of the OJ trial

At 10 a.m. on October 3, 1995, O. J. Simpson was found not guilty. Although there was a lot of controversy surrounding the outcome of the case, some benefits arose with new legislation. The Violence Against Women Act passed through Congress in 1994. This act included provisions for mandatory arrests of abusers, stemming from the actions of OJ towards Nicole Brown Simpson. Also, in 1996, Congress passed a law that prevented domestic batterers from purchasing guns partly as a result of the increased awareness of domestic abuse. After that intimate partner homicide rates decreased 35% for American women, according to a Justice Department study. So, even though OJ committed some of the worst of crimes, he made the legal system realize the danger of domestic and physical abuse which helped put new laws in place.
