Using your position as a journalist to expose racial issues

A friend showed me this video today. It was a reporter on a cable news channel. One day, she apparently was talking about racial issues on the air, and apparently one of her viewers didn't like that. In an email, this viewer called the reporter the n-word, saying that she shouldn't have talked about racial issues on her TV show, because she's black and apparently that's the only reason why she could. The reporter then went on air on December 5, and, in a bold and brave move, called out this person who emailed her as a racist person who misconstrued her viewpoint.

In my opinion, this is fantastic. I think more journalists should be using their power as a social influence to expose these racial issues without having to fear the consequences, because, in the end, if your idea is better, than your idea will succeed in the free marketplace of ideas. If you hold an idea dear, you should stand by it and educate people about your idea, and that's exactly what the journalist did, even going as far as to expose a person who doesn't want her to share her idea. Using your power to share your ideas is one of the best things you can do with that power.

What do you guys think though? I'm interested in hearing.

  1. I think this is a good idea was well its important to for people to use there power but it is also important that what one says influences the media and creates an impact. Its also important to take account of a wide range of audience and not to be to bias to some point or else people could go against you.
