Pros and Cons: Gun Control

Pros:
A major pro for gun control laws is that by regulating firearms, the numbers for gun deaths would decrease. The research was done to see how many deaths were caused by guns, between 1999-2013, and the results were 270,237 suicides (58.2% of total deaths), 174,773 homicides (37.7%), and 9,983 unintentional deaths (2.2%). Guns were the leading cause of death by homicide (66.6% of all homicides) and by suicide (52.2% of all suicides).

The idea of having gun control is so that no one feels like they need to defend themselves with something as deadly as a gun. If gun control laws were implemented, the goal would be that no one would really need to be worried about guns.

If gun control laws were put up, guns could be reduced majorly amongst citizens. This could possibly reduce the chance or irresponsible owners getting ahold of these weapons.

Cons
Gun control laws cannot decrease crime rates that involve firearms, gun ownership can and that is not an easy thing to regulate. No matter what regulations are put on guns, people still buy guns illegally meaning that the gun will most likely not have the regulations if it’s already being bought illegally.

According to the National Rifle Association (NRA), guns are known to be used 2.5 million times a year for self-defense. Many Americans claim that without these weapons they feel unsafe and they feel that they won’t be able to protect themselves and their families.

Gun control laws give too much power to the government. This could lead to a corrupt government that would have the power to take away all the guns from citizens. Some people have stated that the 2nd Amendment is not there for hunting but to protect citizens from government tyranny.
