Gun Laws California v. Mexico
In California, gun permits are given after a thorough background check, usually never lasting more than ten days; this is a much simpler process than in Mexico. People argue that gun laws in California are better because the intentional homicide rate in Mexico, where the guns laws are much tighter, is ranked 1st in the world, having three times more homicides than the U.S. and the overall murder rate in Mexico is ranked 2nd with 98% more than the United State. But, the amount of murderers with firearms in Mexico is ranked 33% less than the United States. This proves that although Mexico may have high crime rates, it is not all caused by guns. Also, most of the crimes committed with guns, are those where the weapons were bought illegally from drug cartels going across Mexico’s borders. Three out of four crime guns recovered in Mexico crimes were from a different state. It was found that 76% of the Mexican crime guns were traced to the U.S. and were sold in Texas, Arizona, and California. Mexico has only one legal gun store, and the guns are usually only for military use. This means that the surrounding countries are actually greatly contributing to the crime in Mexico. If the United States gun laws were stricter, it would make both countries considerably safer.
