Societal Damages Caused by High Functioning Sociopaths

A sociopath is a person who exhibits an antisocial personality, antisocial behaviors, little understanding of social norms, and a lack of empathy. Meanwhile, a high functioning sociopath describes someone with these same traits, yet tends to be more intelligent, and thus better at integrating with the rest of society. These high functioning sociopaths are proficient in exemplifying themselves as the person that others want to see, thanks to how quickly they pick up on others' ticks and personalities. A few examples of sociopathic tendencies are showing superior intelligence, possessing intuitive social skills, being charming, coming from a strong family background, staying driven, being calculated, assessing situations and planning action, being patient/willing to work people and situations until the right time to make their move. By engineering their lives and others' to flow perfectly at their rhythm, high functioning sociopaths will constantly remain at least several moves ahead of the rest of society, without anybody else suspecting a thing. They are likely to get anything they want and have everything go their way all of the time – this can cause a lot of damage in our society, and we need to watch out for it.

  1. One thing we should always keep in mind is that sociopaths are people too. People tend to look at them like test subjects and dehumanize people. It is a disorder, not a choice, so we should try to be empathetic.
